Broome, a seaside town
in the Kimberley, was gazetted a townsite in 1883. It is named after
Sir Frederick Napier Broome (1842-1896) who was the then Governor
of Western Australia. He took office in June 1883 and in September
1890 was appointed acting Governor of Barbados.
