The townsite of Moora is located
in the northern agricultural area, 172 km north of Perth. When the
Midland Railway Company railway line from Midland to Walkaway was
opened in 1894, Moora was one of the original stations on the line.
The government decided there was sufficient demand for land in the
area to survey lots and gazette a townsite, and Moora townsite was
gazetted in 1895.
Moora is the Aboriginal name of the
locality, derived from "moora-moora" meaning 'good spirit'.
The area of Glentromie farm to the south was known by the Aboriginal
place name, "murra murra". Another source gives Moora as
a word meaning "grandparent", although the location where
this name was used is not known.
