About Skills.net The original skills.net... Established by the Victorian Government, the Skills.net program provides free or affordable Internet access and training to those Victorians who wouldn’t otherwise have such access. The Skills.net program is offered to all Victorians, however particularly assists technologically disadvantaged groups including rural and remote communities, people with disabilities, older Victorians, women, Indigenous Victorians and people from a non-English speaking background. Since 1997, the Skills.net program has trained more than 66,000 people through its network of more than 750 centres across Victoria. By June 2003, a total of 80,000 Victorians will receive Internet training and access under the Skills.net program. An integral part of the Skills.net program is its Roadshow, sponsored by BHP Billiton, which travels throughout Victoria working with local community organisations to raise awareness about the Internet and provide introductory training. In June 2000, the BHP Billiton Skills.net Roadshow was recognised internationally when it was selected as a finalist in the world’s largest information society competition, The Stockholm Challenge. The BHP Billiton Skills.net Roadshow in Queensland/Western Australia/New South Wales builds on the Victorian Government’s Skills.net Roadshow. The Skills.net program is an initiative of the Victorian Government through its Connecting Communities framework which aims to ensure that the benefits of online technologies are shared across the entire community.
